dress

Rachael asked...

It's pleated...

My first attempt at machine pleating went well. It's actually really easy.

...smocked...

There is something so gentle, so romantic about traveling in my favorite train seat (facing backwards by the window) and smocking as Russia flies past the window, bathed in twilight.

...and constructed!

Mostly. It still needs two buttons and a hem.

And then I need to make her doll a matching one. I think it will have the same pink ribbon but no smocking.

The dress is actually darker, a more saturated colour, than it appears in these photos.

Beautiful dress! I didn't know what smocking was, but now I do . . . Will you be smocking on Tuesday?

That is breathtakingly beautiful! I have never seen the "pleating" machine - which would, indeed, simplify things! I smocked a dress years ago and the smocking was not hard, but the pleating was, as I recall because I had to do it by hand. I adored that dress (it was for myself) and wore it until the cotton dissolved.

Oh, it's beautiful, and she will look beautiful in it. Love the color. And I also enjoy the mental photo of you smocking on the train, with a contented smile on your face. :-)

Kate, that is absolutely beautiful. My little Russian guy wore a lot of smocking in his jon-jons and I was sad when he outgrew the look. Girls can do it way longer!

Precious! I bought some pre-smocked material at walmart and sewed the edges together and felt ilke mother of the year. Now I see otherwise. :-) Just finished some school sewing too. Very fun!
