indulge me

I am a healthy eater--no red meat, naturally low-fat foods. As few pesticides and nasty things on my food as it's possible to get here. (Now I'm missing my fruit stand in Chattavegas and those free stone PEACHES...) I eat in-season foods. I don't eat desserts or sweets or junk. No chips, no cookies, no ice cream...just good food. Great. Gold star. Low blood pressure and cholesterol. And, although it doesn't have the effect on my weight I'd like it to, I feel healthy.

I'm out of sorts today. When I was at the grocery store earlier I took my cart down two aisles I generally don't. One was the out-of-season fruits aisle. On my counter right now are blackberries (my favourite!) and blueberries (my pseudo-niece Maddie's favorite...and a sentimental choice).

My second atypical purchase was made to make my most indulgent junk food choice. Sometimes I crave brownies. But, after years of Bill Cosby proving that chocolate cake is a healthy breakfast choice (huh--not on y*utube. go fig.), they don't scream junk food they way they should. No, what I bought today was peanut m&m's. I put them in a bowl of popcorn to make a treat that I crave maybe once or twice a year. Popcorn with peanut m&m's makes me think of my friend Grace. It makes me think of the time we went and saw Moulin Rouge for my birthday. (We laughed so hard! That is a great film cleverly made by a person who loves musicals.) It makes me think of living in London.

I ate them curled up in my favourite armchair under a lavender-and-chamomile-scented green blanket watching last week's GH. That is the epitome of indulgent.

Time to share! What are your favorite once-in-a-while indulgences?

I also buy blackberries and raspberries every now and then out of season as a treat. My rationale when I buy them is that I don't buy costly cigarettes so I should be able to indulge every now and then on costly berries. I did pass them up yesterday though. They were $3.98 which is a lot cheaper than a pack of Marlboro's though.

Your post reminded me that I still need to do Annie's "8 things that lift your spirits" tag. I'll have to get right on that...

I love to occasionally indulge in a little Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia. This tastes best with a little chopped up banana and a sprinkle of chocolate chips on top, eaten curled up on the couch with a blanket and a warm fire, watching something equally delicious on TV (Lost or House would suffice) in an otherwise quiet, sleeping household.

Whenever I indulge, it always reminds me of when Jack was a baby, and he was a very good little eater with very ample pudgey baby thighs that were dubbed "Ben" and "Jerry" in reference to my near daily craving at the time.

(sorry about the double post...the first was a typo-fest)

The fact that you eat real food far overshadows the fact that your fruit isn't in season. Ohh I had grapes the other day. Little round bits of heaven. As I don't buy much fruit out of season (with the exception of bananas).

Little guilty indulgence. Pop Tarts. Cherry Pop Tarts. I only eat them once every 4 years or so. But I do have a regular junk food repertoire. I like a good chocolate chip cookie on occasion and ice cream when the body allows it. But a Pop Tart. mmmm.

You are so good. I, on the other hand, am not. I rarely eat fruit - not necessarily because I don't like it - I just can't get to it before the kids eat it.
My favorite indulgence is similar to yours. Popcorn with M&Ms. No peanuts for me...I need the pure salt and sweet. (Confession time - I took a 2# bag of M&Ms and five microwave popcorn packets with me to Ukraine and I ate it ALL! I guess that's why my Kiev diet didn't work so well. :0))

I wish I was as good as you! My favorite indulgence is drinking a cup of tea in front of a roaring fire while reading a good book. Times like that are basically non-existent since bringing the kids home!

As for foods, I love sticky date (or sticky toffee) pudding with a side of vanilla ice cream. It is soooooooo gooooood!

BTW, have you gotten my PIF yet? I sent it out weeks ago! Of course, international mail is not exactly the quickest...

One - the height of the "cheap and the selfish" is settling in to watch an evening of "Forensic Files" or "48 Hours" with a Haagen Dazs bar (almond).

Two - the "classic and social" is settling in with Lydia or Anastasia to watch Masterpiece Theater, with popcorn and diet cokes. (YEAH! Tonight Pride and Prejudice continues!!!)

Another real biggie, since with the five children I am now NEVER ALONE. Is somehow sneaking out to go "shopping" all by myself. This is so rare an event as to be nearly an endangered form of self-indulgence for me.

Mine is similar, but really only works in movie theaters... milk duds + movie popcorn. Must be real movie popcorn, not homemade. YUM! it's a salty sweet saturated fat preservative-laden indulgence. Thus, it happens rarely. But I do love it so.

I just enjoy shoveling everything peanut buttery/chocolatey/salty in my mouth. It enhances my parenting abilities.

Oh Kate...what can I eat during our next phone call?

I indulge a little too frequently. Rare treats though: reece's peanut butter cups...the little ones found at Halloween (go figure, I don't like the big ones). I also love air popped popcorn with sweet cream butter and popcorn salt. Yummy.

The popcorn and peanut m & m's sounds sooo good! I sometimes make a mix of sorts with any leftovers I have in the cabinets. The kids like it.
