happy birthday, st. p

This weekend the city is celebrating its birthday. There have been parades, fireworks, and a big street party--Russian style--on Nevsky Prospekt. It's been turned into a pedestrian zone for the weekend. Accoridng to In Your Pocket, this year, for the first time, they've introduced an element to the celebration called

the Bride and Groom Festival. Celebrating the family in Russian life, it is dedicated to promoting happy family values. It also features a kind of informal dating agency where unmarried hopefuls can meet their soulmate. The grand finale will be the arrival of a launch laden with beautiful girls in wedding gowns. So to all singles (and looking) of St. Petersburg, get thee to the Peter and Paul Fortress.

Intriguing as that may be, I have decided not to be out and about today. ;>

I've never really like watching parades. Being in them is fun, but standing and watching--not so much. I remember thinking last year that next year (which would be this year) I'd go. I'd take d2b to see the parade and the festivities, as long as it looked like something we could handle.

But, this year, I'm not going either. It's just not the sort of thing I feel like exploring on my own. I'm so not a party girl. Perhaps next year I'll go. I'll take d2b to see the parade and the festivities, as long as it looks like something we can handle.

Should you copy and save this post for next year, in case you decide not to go? hehe. I don't blame you, not much into parades either!

So does this mean your mouse is working again?

I always oblige the kids with parades too, but the crowds are a pain, especially trying to get out at the end. Same problem with 4th of July fireworks.

St. Pete's is a crazy city. The apartment agency that we rented from on our three trips (great apts. BTW) always sent a different pretty girl to meet us and get us settled and she always left her business card with its' glamour-shot-esque photo on it. That's what I thought of when you told about the bride and groom festival. So you're not game for that one, eh? ;>

The "next year I'll do this with d2b" memories are tough for me. There have been more than I want to remember. But soon... all waiting does eventually come to an end!

I guess I'm in the minority. I love parades. :-) Especially at Disney World! And Mardi Gras. And Dickens on the Strand... see what I mean?! lol

Me neither, not sure why, but not a fan apart from the first time I took princess and sweet pea to the Santa Clause Parade!

Sounds like you'll definately be there another year!

I think the fun part about parades is seeing how excited the children get. I imagine parades will be fun again once we have our daughters to share the experience with.

Sounds like a neat celebration. When we were in Russia last year, we were fortuneate enough to be in Red Square on a Saturday. A beautiful sunny Saturday. Many brides and grooms were walking around having their wedding pictures taken. It was breathtaking. I took photos of many. It was neat to see what they dress like in their culture for their celebrations ;o)
